Situation

Internet traffic volume has increased by a factor of more than 60 from 2005 to 2015, and is constantly growing. With this exponential growth in data traffic comes the need for clean and efficient cooling technologies for expanding data rooms. Telecommunication companies are currently facing a big challenge: the majority of their cooling units in their server rooms use either HCFCs or HFCs.

They needed a solution in order to comply with the Montreal Protocol regulations. In 2015, 90% of the HCFCs were removed from the market and by 2020, 99.5% of the HCFC are going to be removed. Moreover, HFC will also be phased down, due to the 2015 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The table below, issued by the government of Canada, shows the planned HFC phase down.

Solution

Carnot Réfrigération and Bell Canada have been collaborating on the solution to this growing problematic since 2012. After rigorous discussions between the parties and meticulous laboratory testing, an innovative cooling system came to light.

The AquilonTM

Conclusion
